Mykonos vs Santorini – Which Greek Island is for you?

Mykonos and Santorini are not only two of the most popular islands in Greece but also some of the most popular islands in the world.

They are both located in the Cyclades of the Aegean. They both have whitewashed houses, cobbled alleys, orthodox churches and picturesque windmills.

And they are both known as the Queens of the Aegean.

But can there be more than one queen? Let’s find out!

Mykonos

Mykonos is the Ibiza of Greece and one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the Medditeranean. It is an island with intense nightlife which attracts thousands of Greeks and foreign visitors every year.

Mykonos is well-known for its luxurious life and endless parties. This party atmosphere is noticeable from the moment you step your foot on the island. Some of the most popular Myconian bars and clubs are Cavo Paradiso, Astra, and Skandinavian Bar & Club.

But there’s more to Mykonos than parties. The island is also known for its enchanting and beautiful beaches. Most beaches are organized, meaning they have all-day beach bars, restaurants and cafés. Psarou beach, Super Paradise and Platys Gialos are some of these must-visit beaches.

Santorini

Santorini is world famous for its incomparable natural beauty, the magnificent sunsets, the volcano with its impressive caldera and the unique view of the Aegean. The beauty of the natural landscape of Santorini is truly breathtaking, making it ideal for a romantic vacation.

If you visit Santorini, you will have the opportunity to enjoy good food and delicious local recipes, such as Fava me koukia (Mashed up fava beans), Tomatokeftedes (Tomato fritters) and Saganaki (Fried cheese in filo pastry covered in honey).

Santorini is, of course, also known for its volcano, to which it owes its unique morphology; the volcanic presence dominates the landscape. Santorini’s caldera is also the only caldera with houses in the world! Last but not least, let us not forget Santorini’s amazing sunset, which is one of the most beautiful in the Aegean.

Mykonos vs Santorini

If we had to condense this article into two sentences, it would look like this:

You should visit Mykonos for its nightlife and beaches.

You should visit Santorini for its romantic atmosphere, wineries, and hikes.

Mykonos is all about fun while Santorini is more laid back. It really depends on your interests and how you are looking to spend your time. If you are looking to dance, party and go shopping, then Mykonos is what you should be looking for. On the other hand, if you are into fine dining, romantic sunsets, and hiking, then Santorini is the right place for you.

Whether you choose to stay in Mykonos or Santorini, however, it’s highly suggested you do so in a luxury villa. Renting a villa through a villa rental company comes with many benefits, such as privacy, comfort and safety.

You shouldn’t also exclude the possibility of visiting both islands. You can do so on the same trip as it takes no more than 3 hours to get from one island to another with a ferry.
